The European Journal of Geography will publish a special issue with selected papers from the Spatial Humanities 2024 Conference.

We're thrilled to share that this year, the European Journal of Geography (EJG) is collaborating with the Spatial Humanities 2024 Conference. This prestigious event will take place in Bamberg, a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site, in September 2024.

As part of this partnership, the most intriguing and innovative papers presented at the conference will be reviewed for a special EJG issue edited by Dr. Seraphim Alvanides (UK), Dr. Joana Catarina Vieira Paulino (Portugal) & Dr. Alexandros Bartzokas-Tsiompras (Greece).

The Special Issue, titled “Spatial Humanities and Contemporary Geographical Approaches”, aims to explore a variety of themes including (but not limited to):

  • Gazetteers, Artificial intelligence, Spatial explorations of narratives, literary and imaginary places, GIS and spatial analysis including 3D modeling and spatial statistics, Deep mapping, experiences of places, Territorial representations, transgressions, subalternity and boundaries, Mapping mobility, spatial connections and networks, Linking the map and the text: mixed-method approaches, Geospatial ‘collections as data’, enrichment and annotation, Historical maps and georeferencing, Environmental humanities: landscapes, waterscapes and the blue humanities, Linked Open (Geo)Data, IIIF applications for maps and spatial data, Labs notebooks, workflows and infrastructure, Data mining, visualisation and the challenges of geolocation, Building, mapping and spatially analysing heritage inventories.

We encourage all the invited participants of the conference to submit their full papers (before October 10th 2024) and be part of this incredible opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in spatial humanities and geography.

Manuscript submission information:

All submissions must be original and may not be under review elsewhere. All manuscripts will be submitted via the European Journal of Geography online submission system. Authors should indicate that the paper is submitted for consideration for publication in this special issue. When choosing Manuscript “Article Type” during the submission procedure, click “SI_SPAT_HUM_2024”, otherwise your submission will be handled as a regular manuscript.

All submitted papers should address significant issues pertinent to the theme of this issue and fall within the scope of our Journal. Criteria for acceptance include originality, contribution and scientific merit. All manuscripts must be written in English with high scientific writing standards. Acceptance for publication will be based on referees’ and editors’ recommendations, following a detailed peer review process.
