Issue Description
Teaching Geography for a World in Transition: Powerful Teaching in Uncertain Times (SI_TGEO)
This Special Issue of the European Journal of Geography presents a collection of peer-reviewed and open-access articles that examine the role of geography education in a world marked by geopolitical realignment, environmental uncertainty, spatial inequality, and rapid digital transformation. Inspired by the theme of the 2026 EUROGEO Conference, the contributions explore how geography teaching responds to conditions of uncertainty, contestation, and complexity, and how it supports learners in understanding global change and their own spatial positioning.
The accepted articles address key debates in contemporary geography education, including powerful geographical knowledge, spatial thinking, critical and future-oriented pedagogies, and teacher agency in times of transition. Empirical and conceptual contributions examine the teaching of controversial issues, decolonising perspectives, spatial justice and belonging, epistemic uncertainty, and the opportunities and limitations associated with digital tools and artificial intelligence in educational contexts. Together, the papers highlight how geography education contributes to critical citizenship, resilience, and informed engagement with a rapidly changing world. By bringing together diverse international perspectives and methodological approaches, this EJG Special Issue advances current discussions on the societal relevance and transformative potential of geography education in uncertain times.
